Like any business venture, freelancing requires an enormous amount of passion, dedication and guts to follow through. This is akin to an inexperienced swimmer jumping in the deep end of the swimming pool. So, what does it take to be a freelancer-and a successful one at that?

Most of the freelancers I know started out their ventures as a hobby but it evolved to the point of leaving their full time jobs. The basics of success for any business venture are the competitive entrepreneurial nature of the owners. Freelancing is no exception. Why, you may ask. Let’s face it, when starting out, it’s not like you have a whole battalion of clients keeping you awake as you work on their projects. You will need a bit of leg work to get clients. Marketing becomes an integral and important part of freelancing. Every chance one gets they should market themselves as the most competent freelancer available. Coupled with that, there is management of both time and self. Invoicing, human resource, finance management, taxes, e.t.c. do you have an entrepreneurial spirit in you?
Skills, Education And Talent
Freelancers are creative beings and are able to see finished products from seemingly hopeless situations. Talent is a plus as this will reduce the torment of working on something that is difficult to comprehend. For example, an interior designer is able to envision a clutter-free, well laid room in a cluttered room. Superb skills are a definitely needed. Education is a distance third as most of the successful freelancers do not possess MBAs or PhDs. However, to be good at what one does, one should dedicate sometime to learning for continual growth.
