Another Year Begins…
It has been one year- April 3rd- since I began this blog. Due to work commitments, I have to admit I have neglected this medium. On that ‘fateful’ day I decided to write and pen my thoughts and experiences was the most nerve wracking, hair raising moment for me. It’s been a journey of learning. Discovering. Experimenting. Doubting. Like any journey undertaken, one needs to take it in strides, ‘attack’ obstacles as they come one’s way and relish in the side views on your sojourn.
A year ago I was new to freelancing as an option for making money, and blogging as a way for me to share my experiences. Quite frankly I didn’t know any freelancer at the time, as those who I knew were working a full-time job and writing part-time as a hobby or share their expert opinion. Has the scene changed between then and now? Yes and no. Yes, as I have met many people both in person and through emails who desire to make freelancing (with all its perks) something they can engage in fulltime. It’s quite encouraging that technology has opened up avenues for people to get paid for doing what they love. No, things have not changed as much as I would have liked/hoped to see. It is disheartening that local content mills are paying freelancers pittance.
The buzz and urgent need for local content is only picking momentum. And this is the chance for freelancers either writers, illustrators, animators, designers or other creatives to take advantage of. Tandaa symposiums is one of the many platforms that are giving local content creators a chance to meet, mingle, share, exchange ideas and learn. iHub and iLab are also some of the forums for freelancers, designers and IT ‘geeks’ has presented a platform for these people.
As I embark on my second year, the mistakes of the past year have been taken into consideration. The triumphs have also been mounted on the wall to act as a constant reminder that I can do this. And the blog welcomes (always has) other freelancers to write in, sharing their experiences and helping everyone learn, as experience is the best teacher.
